Join Us for Neewollah’s 100th Anniversary!

Every year in October Independence, KS throws a special celebration called Neewollah. Neewollah, Halloween spelled backward, is an event that has been going on since 1919, making this year’s event the 100th Anniversary! What started as a way to keep young people out of mischief on Halloween has turned into a 10-day affair, filled with fun events for everyone who attends. A town of 10,000 becomes a town of 80,000 or more during this event. People come from all over to enjoy this celebration and it is the largest annual celebration in Kansas. This year the Neewollah festival runs from October 18-26 and everyone is welcome to attend.
Neewollah kicks off this year on Friday, October 18th, with, “Shrek the Musical,” starting at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Saturday, October 19th, is the Chili Cook-Off, which will be held at the Riverside Park Oval. Check-in for the cook-off starts at 6:00 a.m. People are welcome to register to compete in this chili cook-off. There will be three judges to sample each participant's chili and decide the winners. Go to the Neewollah website to download and complete an entry form if you would like to participate. Also, on Saturday, there will be a Fun Run/Walk, 5K, and a 10K. These will be held at the Riverside Park Oval and starts at 8:30 a.m. on the 19th. At 10:00 a.m. on the 19th, there is a corn-hole tournament, check-in is at 9:30 a.m. at the Riverside Park Oval. Saturday’s events end with two entertainment options for people. Neewollah Night at the Movies starts at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the Independence Cinema, doors open at 6:15 p.m. Or you can enjoy the first showing of, “Shrek the Musical,” which will start at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
Sunday Neewollah continues with an afternoon encore of Shrek the Musical at 2:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Monday at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall is the traditional Queen Neelah talent competition. The Queen Neelah Coronation is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22nd, in Memorial Hall. On Wednesday the 23rd downtown Independence becomes a street filled with food vendors and stands of all kinds. These concession stands are open Wednesday through Saturday. The Ottaway Carnival also opens on the 23rd, starting at 5:00 p.m. in downtown Independence. The Ottaway Carnival is open Wednesday through Saturday in the afternoons. Bandstand entertainment is also provided in downtown Independence which features local artists and talent.
Thursday, October 24th, the annual Doo Dah Parade marches through downtown Independence, starting at 6:00 p.m. Here you will find adults dressed up in some of the most creative costumes out there. Friday at 4:00 p.m. the annual Kiddie Parade rolls through downtown Independence where elementary school students can dress up in their Halloween costumes and show them off to the town. The Marine Forces Reserve Band Concert, which was established in 1978, will be held on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall and will feature a Marine Corps fleet band. To close out this 10-day celebration there will also be an arts and crafts show, the Neewollah Grand Parade, a marching band competition, and a professional concert with performer Chase Bryant.
While a majority of these events are free to the public, a few of the Neewollah events do require a ticket to be purchased. The Shrek Musical tickets range from $12.00 to $14.00 per seat. The Nellah Queen’s Talent Competition tickets run from $6.00 to $8.00. The Nellah Queen’s Coronation tickets range from $10.00 to $12.00. The nation-wide country sensation Chase Bryant concert tickets range from $24.95, $29.95, to $34.95. All payments can be made by check, VISA, and MasterCard.
