A Dream Bakery Becomes a Reality

When Tercia Gustin opened MuffinTops Bakery in Independence, Kansas, she set out to bring fresh, homemade baked goods to the community. Established in 2025 at 110 E. Laurel, the bakery became a reality with support from the Kansas Small Business Development Center (SBDC), housed within Montgomery County Action Council (MCAC).

Like many new business owners, Gustin faced important decisions about growing her business and investing in the right equipment. She reached out to the Kansas SBDC to better understand grant opportunities that could help purchase a new commercial stove. Working alongside SBDC Advisor Laura Keller, Gustin received guidance throughout the grant writing process, making what could have been an overwhelming experience much more manageable.

That partnership paid off. Through the FORGE grant opportunity and the support of the Kansas SBDC, MuffinTops Bakery was able to purchase a new oven and stovetop combination, giving the business the equipment needed to serve customers and continue growing.

Reflecting on the experience, Gustin says Laura Keller was "extremely helpful during the grant writing process," highlighting the personalized assistance available to entrepreneurs through the Kansas SBDC.
As someone who has recently launched a business, Gustin also offers advice to other entrepreneurs: “Be intentional, yet flexible with your decisions. Keep your end goal in mind.”
