Big Dreams, Bold Moves, and Business Growth in Independence

Growing a small business takes vision, persistence, and the courage to take the next step. For KyLee Medlock, owner of Studio K & Kvell Salon in Independence, Kansas, that next step came in 2026 when she expanded her established salon into a new, larger location with support from the Kansas Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and Montgomery County Action Council (MCAC).
Medlock originally opened Studio K & Kvell Salon in 2022, building her business and developing a vision for what it could become. As the salon grew, she saw an opportunity to expand into a larger space that better aligned with her goals for the business. Making that vision a reality, however, required navigating the challenges of expansion, including planning, financing, and securing the right location.

Turning a Vision Into Reality

Through support from the Kansas SBDC and MCAC, Medlock received guidance and encouragement as she worked toward her expansion goals. The process helped her feel more confident in taking the next step and pursuing an opportunity that once may have felt out of reach.
“They made me feel like my dreams weren’t too big and gave me confidence that I was headed in the right direction,” Medlock shared.
With that support, Medlock moved forward with her plans, becoming a building owner and relocating Studio K & Kvell Salon to a new, larger space in 2026. The expansion represents an important milestone for the business, creating an environment that better reflects her vision and provides room for continued growth.
Her experience demonstrates how access to business guidance and a supportive network can help entrepreneurs navigate the complexities of expansion and make informed decisions about their businesses' futures.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Reflecting on her journey, Medlock encourages other entrepreneurs to take the leap, work hard, and trust the process.
“Take the leap, work hard, and trust God with the outcome. Know what your dream is and just take it step by step!” she advised.
Her story is a reminder that business growth happens one step at a time. Whether an entrepreneur is launching a new business or expanding an established one, persistence, a clear vision, and access to the right resources can make a meaningful difference.

Supporting Small Business Growth in Montgomery County

Studio K & Kvell Salon's expansion highlights the value of small-business support beyond the startup phase. While Medlock established her salon independently in 2022, the Kansas SBDC and MCAC helped support her next chapter as she pursued a larger location in 2026.

MCAC is proud to work alongside the Kansas SBDC to help Montgomery County entrepreneurs access guidance, build confidence, and pursue opportunities for growth. By supporting businesses at different stages of their journeys, these partnerships help strengthen local businesses, encourage investment, and contribute to a thriving regional economy.
