Nordic Turbine Service & Their SBDC Story
February 23, 2026
Nordic Turbine Services of Independence, KS
Since launching in November 2020 and transitioning to full-time operations in February 2023, Nordic Turbine Service has steadily built its presence at 3848 West Main as a specialized jet engine overhaul facility serving the aviation industry. Founded by Daniel Thorenson under Thorenson Enterprise LLC, the company provides critical engine servicing that requires precision, safety, and highly specialized equipment. What began as a vision has grown into a serious operation positioned for long-term impact in Independence and throughout Montgomery County.
As a startup in a capital-intensive industry, Nordic Turbine Service identified early on that reliable equipment would be essential for both safety and sustainability. Nordic Turbine Services has received 2 grants with the direction of SBDC. Through the FORGE Grant program, the company received $5,000 toward the purchase of a forklift—an investment that directly addressed a key operational need. The forklift allows engines to be safely transported throughout the shop and loaded onto transport rigs for testing and return to customers. Ultimately, Nordic contributed $14,710 toward the total $19,710 purchase, securing a higher-capacity 10,000 lb. forklift that was purchased and repaired locally, keeping funds circulating within Montgomery County.
Through the American Express Backing Small Businesses program, Nordic received a highly competitive $10,000 grant to go towards other equipment needs- receiving one of the 400 awarded nationwide. This addition of this equipment not only protects valuable engines from potential damage but also creates greater efficiency, positioning the company for future hiring and expansion.
Throughout this journey, Nordic Turbine Service worked alongside the Kansas Small Business Development Center, receiving guidance from advisor Laura Keller and the Montgomery County Action Council team in Independence. While Daniel noted he initially reached out without a specific problem to solve, the support proved invaluable in building a strong business plan and navigating unknown startup areas. “The Montgomery Action Council here in Independence is amazing and helped me build my business plan and direct me through the unknown areas,” he shared. That partnership helped solidify the foundation needed to move confidently from the startup phase into sustained growth.
Reflecting on his entrepreneurial experience, Daniel offers practical advice to new business owners: he wishes he had access to a basic startup checklist or process map to ensure all legal and foundational steps were completed upfront. His advice underscores the importance of preparation and guidance, all of which can be provided through the Kansas SBDC at MCAC. With essential equipment secured, a clear business plan in place, and continued growth on the horizon, Nordic Turbine Service is well on its way to becoming a strong employer in Independence—demonstrating how strategic investment and strong local support can power long-term success.
